About

This online, self-study course, "An Introduction to Nonprofit Accounting," is a comprehensive program designed for new nonprofit leaders, board members, and founders without a formal accounting background. The course is a blueprint for understanding the foundational principles of nonprofit financial management and is structured to demystify complex financial concepts. The curriculum provides an in-depth exploration of why nonprofit accounting is fundamentally different from for-profit accounting, focusing on the mission-driven purpose and public accountability that guide all financial decisions. Through five in-depth modules, learners will be equipped to confidently navigate their fiduciary responsibilities and ensure the credibility and sustainability of their organizations.   The course covers the core tenets of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for nonprofits, the critical importance of fund accounting, and how to read and interpret the four essential financial statements. It also provides practical, day-to-day guidance on topics such as bookkeeping, expense allocation, and budgeting. To successfully complete this program and earn CPE credit, participants must complete all course modules and pass a final examination with a minimum score of 70%. The awarded CPE credits are based on a formal calculation and are determined by a pilot test to validate the representative completion time. This course aims to empower leaders to use their financial documents as strategic tools for growth and to build public trust through enhanced transparency and compliance, including an understanding of the vital IRS Form 990. CPE Hours: 5.0
